About Me

I’m a rabid, avid beader of art quilts. It’s amazing how easy it is to be seduced by those little glass, plastic, and metal orbs. As the “Self-proclaimed Button and Bead Queen of North Carolina”, I welcome you to my occasional ramblings about me and my art work. (When you give yourself a title, nobody can take it away, although I do have a really, really big stash!)

At one point in my life, I was dating a guy and we came up with personal mission statements. They were sort of our reasons for being in the planet. Here’s mine…

Nancy’s Reason for Being or ma Raison d’être

I do hereby declare that I am here on this earth to fulfill the following:
-to radiate light and love as I move through my life, and to walk in the shadows peacefully where I can embrace their lessons.
-to impart beauty in all of its many manifestations.
-to inspire gentle healing for all life forms by allowing energy to move through me.
-to strive for spiritual, emotional, sexual, and intellectual balance in my own life and with those around me.
-to seek the Highest Good for all in my dealings with others.

For myself, I want the following:
-exquisite peace
-sweet intensity
-overflowing joy
-boundless love
-constant connection with the Universal energy

 What I’m trying to do:

I am creating a community of those who want to connect with each other with loving hearts and open souls. I want to create an environment where the divinity in each being is honored. I wish to actively promote a place where connection with the Universal Stream of Energy is attainable by all, and light and dark are given their due accord.

I hope that you’ll join in the conversations and share your thoughts and ideas about how I view the world and this amazing art form of art quilts.

Dear Lynn, thanks so much for the kind comment. I was wondering if you would elaborate as to exactly what is it that you like about my work or my writing? It’s always good to get feedback from enthusiastic people so I can give them more of what they want..:)

Your pieces are intricately detailed, and I find that to be inspiring. I’m easily intimidated anymore, and so not very often inspired by much. I find a little more courage each time I wander through your galleries; seeing what you’ve done, reading about what you’ve done, gives me the courage, reinforces my hope, that I could maybe succeed at this too. I don’t have a great deal of confidence or faith in myself anymore, I’m afraid of other people, afraid to try for being judged, and so the things I dream of doing seem very out of reach for me. Seeing work like yours (which is very much what I imagine doing for myself) brings me a sense of peace and compassionate encouragement, a sense of acceptance that grows into a sense of peaceful strength that is more borrowed from a community of people all striving to express themselves than internal (I think), and gaining strength with each new success at it. Your work shows us all it is Possible, and maybe I can as well, when I try, there will be someone I can try to connect with who can help me along the way. A midwife of artistic endeavours.

I need community, compassion for my early efforts, which will likely not be as pleasing to the eye or senses. I need instruction and experience and patience, as well as room to explore without it costing an arm and a leg, which is where experience can be handy; your work shows that you have all of the above. I know that beading is time consuming, takes patience, as does the quilting process itself. Wow…I am grateful to see what I have here. I have a renewed sense of hope. Thank you for sharing the character of who you are, in what you’ve done, with (me) all of us.

  4. Dear, dear Jessica, thank you so much for the very kind words. Please remember that I have been doing this work professionally since 1982, and since the work is so slow, that gives me LOTS of time to fix the “mistakes”. I’ve also given myself permission to just play and not make ART; I’m just playing. Also, there are a few UFOs(unfinished objects) stuck away in corners of my studio. Here’s a story of a quilt of mine that took 4 years to finish… /butting-heads-with-a-quilt-jungle-garden/

Even the big guys have their moments. While visiting the Picasso Museum in Barcelona once, I saw a huge room that had one weeks worth of canvases. There were probably about 20 where he was working out an idea; most of them were pretty bad (I love his work). The one that I liked the best was the next to the last; the last was the one that he ended up exhibiting. I got two important lessons that day….1)even the big guys don’t produce winners every time
    2) you have to keep plugging along.

I’d love to see some of your pieces. Why not send some well-lit pics to info@fiberfantasies.com
